Add your name to petition calling for a UN Emergency Peace Service
Supporters of a United Nations Emergency Peace Service are asking for your support. A new Parliamentary petition, sponsored by Liberal MP Hedy Fry, is open for signatures.
It’s the hope of the petition organizers that this idea might yet spark and inspire people and political will for a more effective UN that can actually prevent armed conflict, protect people, provide prompt care, help and security and encourage military build-down and wider disarmament.
“That would be a key step to shift the vast resources wasted on preparing for more war to help with our climate emergency, poverty reduction and sustainable development,” writes PeaceQuest reader Peter Langille, an expert on the issue.
The International Peace Bureau, which I am a Board member, has endorsed the proposal for a United Nations Emergency Peace Service.
The petition calls upon the Government of Canada to build a coalition of countries supporting the formation of UNEPS, raise the issue at the UN General Assembly and other relevant UN bodies, and ensure the proposed UNEPS is a Canadian priority for both the new UN Agenda for Peace and the 2024 UN Summit of the Future.

Thanks PeaceQuest, for amplifying this UNEPS petition. In taking a leadership role, Canada will once again be recognized as a nation of progressives who understand our responsibility in the common agenda. Together we can achieve a sustainable, more peaceful and secure common future for humanity.
UNEPS is an idea whose time has come (and for a long time this has been the case.) Time for the Canadian government to step up, similar to when it sponsored the rapid reaction study in 1994. The argument for a UNEPS may be better understood now.
