The Trudeau government has significantly increased its financial and military support to Ukraine, overturning a previous decision to send only non-lethal weaponry.

On February 14, 2022, the Prime Minister announced Canada will provide a $500-million loan and $7.8 million worth of lethal equipment and ammunition to Ukraine. He said the pledge is on top of a previously announced $120-million loan and non-lethal weapons that Canada has already provided to Ukraine.

Project Ploughshares says that the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), to which Canada is a party, requires that all arms transfers be subjected to a standardized risk assessment.
