Election speculation is swirling around Ottawa, again. The Liberals are doing well in public opinion polls, with the CBC Poll Tracker placing them at 35%, and the opposition Conservatives at 30%.

According to reports, many Liberal MPs think it is a good time to have an election. However, just as many Liberals are worried about the unpredictable effect of the pandemic on an election while most of the population has not been vaccinated and new COVID-19 variants keep spreading.

Calling an election is not so easy. The Liberals have only been in power a year and a half, and the government would need to lose a vote on a spending bill to force an election, such as the upcoming budget vote.
