Nuclear whistle-blower says Ukraine war testing willingness of nuclear-nations to lose
Daniel Ellsberg says Ukraine could change the rules
Daniel Ellsberg has seen the world come to the brink of nuclear war on more than on occasion during his lifetime. Most famously, he was at the Pentagon during the nuclear standoff between the U.S. and the old Soviet Union (Russia) in the 1960s over Cuba.
Now, the nuclear whistle-blower who famously leaked ground-shaking documents about the war in Vietnam, says that the war in Ukraine is unlike other wars.
Ellsberg warns that previous proxy wars were carefully conducted so as to never brought the U.S. and Russia themselves into direct conflict.
Thinking of Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan (both Soviet and U.S. invasions), and Iraq, Ellsberg says that superpowers were willing to accept defeat without resorting to using nuclear weapons.
These were proxy wars were between a great power against a much weaker opponent, but the outcomes never shifted the balance of power between the Americans and Russians themselves, he says.
But the war in Ukraine is testing that record of avoiding nuclear catastrophe.
