Responding to concerns, PM Trudeau pledges to share excess vaccines
PeaceQuest is urging PM Trudeau and UN Amb Rae to support int'l cooperation
Prime Minister Trudeau responded to critics Sunday saying, “As Canada gets vaccinated, if we have more vaccines than necessary, absolutely we will be sharing with the world.” He made the pledge in an interview with CTV’s Question Period.
Canada was called the word’s biggest COVID-19 vaccine hoarder by the People’s Vaccine Alliance last week, a coalition that includes Oxfam and Amnesty International.
In a statement, Oxfam International warned that, "nearly 70 poor countries will only be able to vaccinate one in ten people against COVID-19 next year unless urgent action is taken by governments and the pharmaceutical industry to make sure enough doses are produced.
“By contrast, wealthier nations have bought up enough doses to vaccinate their entire populations nearly three times over by the end of 2021 if those currently in clinical trials are all approved for use. Canada tops the chart with enough vaccines to vaccinate each Canadian five times.”
PeaceQuest is sending messages to Prime Minister Trudeau and Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations Bob Rae, urging them to support international cooperation to ensure that vaccines are available and affordable for all people and nations.
