Capitals and militaries around the world were completely unprepared for the rapid collapse of the Western-backed government in Afghanistan. The victory of the Taliban seemed to sweep away over twenty years of foreign military and financial efforts, overnight.
The defeat is especially painful for the families of the 158 Canadian soldiers killed during Canada’s Afghan combat mission, and the many thousands more troops who were harmed physically and mentally. Even still, many thousands more Afghan families grieve for relatives killed – both civilian and combatants on all sides.
Considering the recent collapse of Afghanistan’s western-backed government, coming twenty years after the US-led invasion following the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001, please evaluate the following statement:
