What are you remembering on November 11 this year?

Remembrance Day is just around the corner. While the day is intended to commemorate the end of the First World War, it remains a day intertwined with modern politics and symbolism.

National flags are current flying at half-mast across Canada in recognition of the victims and survivors of Canada’s residential school system. This week Ottawa announced that the flag atop the Peace Tower will be raised and lowered again for November 11, which is Remembrance Day.

Quite apart for the national, state-sponsored Remembrance Day message, many Canadians hold the day sacred for their own private commemorations. Some people even choose to wear white poppies in honour of civilians killed in wars, instead of or along side of the traditional red poppies distributed by the Canadian Legion organization.
