On Monday, Defence Minister Anita Anand announced the Liberal government has contracted U.S.-aircraft maker Lockheed Martin for 88 F-35 stealth fighters for $19-billion. The cost over the life of the program will reach at least $70-billion.

Check out these photos of people doing awesome things to oppose the F-35 across Canada. Peace groups held a day of action last weekend to “Drop the F-35 Deal.”

If the Canadian government makes another payment on the development of the F-35 this May, it will have spent more than CAD $1 billion on a warplane capable of dropping nuclear bombs more powerful than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima: https://t.co/tVYTD0o5ub #DropTheF35Deal #TPNW pic.twitter.com/Y3fx1tyzaL

At #Kitchener Market, we're calling on @CanadianGreens MP @morricemike to stand up & oppose @JustinTrudeau's plans to buy 1st lot of 16 climate destroying #F35 fighter jets for $7 billion (w/ plans to buy 88 for life-cycle cost $77 billion). #DropTheF35Deal @nofighterjets #Peace pic.twitter.com/ke3Za2TNHU

Protest happening now at @cafreeland’s office demanding a foreign policy based on climate action and international solidarity, not billions spent on @LockheedMartin bomber planes. #NoFighterJets #DropTheF35Deal pic.twitter.com/JoYHv5L5zV

In #Toronto at MP @beynate's levee, Murray calls on #Canadian govt to #DropTheF35Deal for his grandchildren & yours. Fighter jets can't solve #climatecrisis, #homelessness, #foodinsecurity & #healthcare shortages. No $ for warplanes. #Peace @CFSCQuakers @VOWPeace @TorontoStar pic.twitter.com/2GvgkmWg3N

We disrupted #Burlington MP @karinagould today to object to #Canada buying 16 climate-destroying #F35 fighter jets for $7 billion when more Canadians live in poverty & need #housing #healthcare & #ClimateAction. #DropTheF35Deal @AnitaAnandMP @HamiltonHcsw https://t.co/VTMKRgOjfO

This past weekend, World BEYOND War and allies have made news with #nonviolent actions all over #Canada in opposition to the purchase of #fighterjets! Learn more about it: https://t.co/73glh0leKm #NoFighterJets #DropTheF35Deal #NoNewFighterJets #GroundTheF35 pic.twitter.com/ZZQ3D4iwoi

As Canadians struggle to make ends meet, @justintrudeau is greenlighting the purchase of 88 stealth attack F-35s at a lifecycle cost of $76.8 billion.

Check out the TV News coverage of the Vancouver/Burnaby #DroptheF35Deal #NoNewFighterJets action from @CityNewsVAN yesterday! Our demands are loud and clear, this $77 billion should go to human needs not new fighter jets!https://t.co/ppb2jMSxhp @nofighterjets #cdnpoli #vanpoli pic.twitter.com/W5yEyLIcdf

At @BardishKW's office in #Waterloo, Govt of #Canada shouldn't buy 16 F-35 fossil fuel-powered fighter jets for $7 billion that's $430 million/warplane, when homeless people are living in tents in our community & we need investments in healthcare & climate action. #DropTheF35Deal pic.twitter.com/aKOeFC7N7H

At @_BryanMay's office in #Cambridge, we're opposed to #Canada buying 16 new fossil fuel-powered #F35s for $7 billion (w/ plans to spend another $12B for 74 more). We need #housing #climateaction & #healthcare. #NoFighterJets #DropTheF35Deal #CutMilitarySpending @NationalDefence pic.twitter.com/xmZI3YzSMI

There are several other urgent needs that have been stated. ie. care for the homeless, low income families, health care crisis, food shortage, care of the earth, climate changes, inequality , covid results etc. Then you hear about $19 billion for war jets. What about the respect and value of each person and their needs? A different kind of war ie. nuclear would possibly end life on our planet in the wrong hands of people who don’t really care about others. Every city in every country need to have the less fortunate people cared for. We are always searching for ways to bring peace. Let us continue to work on this effort. Why should we need 88 fighter jets all at once?
