Naomi Klein: Canada is failing the Trump test
“Canada does what we tell them to do,” quips Trump
Good morning – I hope you are enjoying your summer safely with family and friends. Our hearts are with those affected by the terrible forest fires.
In peace,
Steve
Canadian writer and public intellectual Naomi Klein has done it again.
In a powerful, insightful, frightening and hopeful speech in Mexico City recently, she connects the dots for us in ways that few people can do.
Below you’ll find a 30-minute recording that I want to share with you. My thanks to our friends at the Broadbent Institute for sending it to me.
This speech delivered at the 2025 Panamerican Congress in Mexico City is a compelling call for progressive internationalism rooted in solidarity, inclusivity, and a clear-eyed understanding of the complex, intertwined threats posed by far-right politics, U.S. imperialism, and capitalist disaster dynamics.
Naomi Klein challenges listeners to move beyond reactive resistance and to craft bold, hopeful alternatives that can unify diverse communities and defend the planet.
The insights into “end times fascism,” the role of AI, and the example of grassroots electoral success provide both a diagnosis of the current moment and a blueprint for transformative action.
Here is a summary of some of her main points (machine generated):
Trump’s administration exposes a new, overt phase of U.S. imperialism using trade, tariffs, and military threats. “Tanks and banks,” as she describes it.
The rise of a far-right “end times fascism” blending apocalyptic religious beliefs with reactionary politics and capitalism.
Corporate disaster capitalism and AI technologies exacerbate ecological destruction and social inequality.
Zoran Mandani’s campaign in NYC exemplifies a unifying, inclusive leftist vision grounded in real community needs.
Naomi Klein calls for coordinated, cross-border progressive action to offer irresistible alternatives and stop destructive forces.
